No Crawling! – and other triathlon rules
Cirencester (UK) 27 April 2013 - The Beat the Boss triathlon is organised by Event Logic, a professional sport event organiser, and the triathlon will follow the rules of the Triathlon England Rule Book. In order to create equal opportunity and fair play for all, competitors will have to stay within the rules. If athletes do not meet these requirements penalties may be awarded by the race officials.
The timing chip
Worn on the left ankle, the team timing chip will act as the relay baton. All changes between athletes must take place in the transition zones. The athletes had better make sure that they attach the chip firmly, because no chip = no time!
Doggy paddle
Contrary to popular belief, there is no rule about what stroke you must use in the swimming portion of a triathlon. Most people opt for the classic freestyle, but you will not get kicked out of an Olympic triathlon for doing the doggy paddle! The swimmers will have to perform in open water at an average temperature of 12.5 ˚C. Luckily they are allowed to wear a wetsuit, which keep them warm but also gives them some extra buoyancy. When the water temperature is below 11 ˚C the race might be shortened.
Don’t forget the helmet
Unlike in a normal road race, athletes are not allowed to cycle in groups in a triathlon. The bike ride has to be a fully individual effort. Drafting, taking shelter behind or beside another competitor, is not allowed. Race officials will check if the athletes stay more than 3 bicycle lengths behind one another, and if the overtaking takes place within 15 seconds.
Leave your IPod at home
Headphones, IPods and mobiles are not allowed during a triathlon. Also rule 28 which states that although walking is allowed during the running portion or a triathlon, crawling is not!
